Join us on Saturday 9th August for a coach tour focusing on Carleton & County Monaghan. Departing from the Valley Hotel rear car park, Fivemiletown at 10:00am and picking up in Clogher old P.O. car park c.10:15am. The tour will be led by our President, Jack Johnston. We look forward to seeing you there!

Visit to Errigal Truagh old graveyard c.11:00am. This is the site of Carleton’s poem ‘The Churchyard Bride’, said to have influenced Bram Stoker when he wrote ‘Dracula’.

The next stop will be the townland of Derrygola near Emyvale where Carleton lodged with his McCarron relations (according to his autobiography) when he attended a classical (hedge) school beside Glennan chapel close to Glaslough. It’s thought his route on foot would have taken him across the Blue Bridge at Inishdevlin. One of Carleton’s stories is entitled ‘The Fair of Emyvale’.

The tour will stop at The Coach House in Glaslough c.12 noon for tea/coffee and a scone which is included in the booking fee.

MONAGHAN: on arrival around 1:00pm we will go on a walking tour of the town led by Henry Skeath. It will include a visit to St Patrick’s Church of Ireland church where a memorial sculpture known as ‘The Parting Glance’ is also believed to have inspired Stoker in ‘Dracula’. Monaghan courthouse, Aviemore (Dacre Hamilton connection), McPhillip’s Hotel (now the Westenra Arms), and the birthplace of Charles Gavan Duffy on Dublin Street.

LUNCH (not included in price) can be taken in Fleming’s ‘Barley & Bean’ 1st floor with lift available, or Dinkins café Church Square or at the Westenra Hotel or Neighbourhood in Glaslough Street.

MONAGHAN MUSEUM: the new location is at the Peace Campus building on Glaslough St where will will get a guided tour at 3:00pm – 4:15pm. Exhibits include Castle Leslie artefacts, interviews with famous Monaghan people such as Tommy Bowe, Caitríona Balfe, Ardal O’Hanlon and Barry McGuigan, banners and emblems from the county and GNR railway heritage as well as costumes and the photographic collection of Donal McEnroe featuring scenes from the town 1973-85. Returning at 4:30pm to Clogher & Fivemiletown.
